Italy scores better than the average scores of countries in its region and income group, and higher than the global average, yet there is ample room for improvement relative to top performing countries.

Italy scores poorly in affordability change, and in the mid-range in cigarette price, tax share and tax structure. It would greatly benefit from reducing the cigarette affordability, higher cigarette prices, increasing the tax share of price, and improving the tax structure.
Scores Over Time
Italy's overall score decreased from 2014 to 2018, and since then, it remained constant. There was a failure to reduce the cigarette affordability over time although the cigarette price increased in 2018.
