This Fact Sheet was written based on the findings of the fourth edition of the Cigarette Tax Scorecard. The brief evaluates the cigarette tax policies in Suriname. In 2024, Suriname scored 2 points out of 5 overall. This is roughly equal to the average scores of its region, income group, and the global average, but less than half of the maximum score of 5 so there is substantial room for improvement. Suriname received the most points in the price and tax structure components with 4 points. On the other hand, Suriname received zero points in the affordability change and tax share components. Suriname’s overall score increased between 2014 and 2018, but it has been declining since.
