Cigarette Tax Scorecard (4th Edition): Slovakia [Fact Sheet]
This Fact Sheet was written based on the findings of the fourth edition of the Cigarette Tax Scorecard. The brief evaluates the cigarette tax policies in Slovakia. In 2024, Slovakia scored 3.25 points out of 5 overall. This is higher than the average scores of its region, income group, and the global average, but there is ample room for improvement relative to top performers. The overall score is an average of the following components: the cigarette price, affordability change, the tax share of the price, and the tax structure. Slovakia received the most points in the tax share and tax structure components with 4 points. On the other hand, Slovakia received 2 points in the affordability change component. Slovakia’s overall score decreased slightly between 2014 and 2020, then increased steadily. Although there was an increase in the affordability score, there is a need to continue to increase taxes to reduce affordability. This fact sheet concludes with recommendations for Slovakia's government to strengthen their tax system to improve public health while raising tax revenues.
