An Analysis of the Tobacco Market in Jordan: A Household Survey
This Report was written by Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Jordan. The report assesses the tobacco market based on a smoker pack survey conducted in the Amman, Irbid and Al Mafraq governorates. 84% of the participants were male, and they consumed an average of 26.2 cigarettes each day, while female smokers consumed 25.1 cigarettes each day on average. The findings show that cigarettes are cheap and affordable, contributing to high rates of prevalence and intensity. The average prices for both licit and illicit packs are similar, at JD 2.15 and JD 2.13, respectively, although the range was greater for illicit packs (JD 0.3-4.5 compared to JD 1.15-4.5). 22.2% of all smokers purchased illicit cigarettes, with a higher prevalence among males than females, 24.4% and 10.8%, respectively. Smokers ages 26-36, those residing in Amman or AlMafraq, married individuals, and those with a higher education level were also more likely to purchase illicit cigarettes. The presence of some lesser known illicit brands suggests smuggling. The report concludes with recommendations for policy makers to raise tobacco taxes and strengthen regulations to secure the supply chain.
